Engineering as an Art

I have spent most of my career around engineers. Teaching them. Working alongside them. Hiring them. Leading them. And the thing I have learned is that the best ones do not think of what they do as just a job.

There is a difference between an engineer who solves problems and one who sees the whole system. The first one can calculate. The second one can design. Both are necessary. But the second one is rare, and when you find that person, you do not let them go.

At Bravo Team, we hire for that instinct. Technical skill is the floor, not the ceiling. What we look for is someone who can hold competing constraints in their head at the same time and find the path that satisfies all of them without giving up on the ones that matter most.

That is what I mean by engineering as an art. It is not about making things pretty. It is about making things right — and knowing the difference between the two.

I first ran into that in the Army, where you do not get to optimize for one variable when twenty-one people are depending on you. I have run into it in a lab, a classroom, and a machine shop since. The setting changes and the discipline does not.
